Buy a Doughnut Day

Happy "Buy a Doughnut Day!" This day is linked to "National Doughnut Day" on the first Friday of June every year-- on this day, many doughnut shops give away doughnuts for free! The history behind this grand holiday goes way back to 1938 during World War I. The holiday was founded by the Salvation Army and traces back to when Salvation Army volunteers first started serving doughnuts to soldiers for breakfast during the war.

We celebrated this day by sampling doughnuts from popular artisanal doughnut shops in Oakland: Doughnut Dolly (482 B 49th Street) and Doughnut Savant (1934 Broadway). We also decided to pick up some classic doughnuts to compare.

Delicious hand filled doughnuts from Doughnut Dolly. We loved the pluot flavor!
